Transforming Your Next Office With the IoT
In the 1990's, we started coming on line. In the 2000's, devices like the iPhone put the internet in our pockets, letting us stay connected anywhere and everywhere. The 2010s are the decade when the Internet crossed the barrier from people to things. Internet of Things technology -- usually referred to as the IoT -- allows devices to directly connect themselves to the network. While IoT has uses throughout industry, one of the areas where it is rapidly catching on is in office buildings. Whether you're looking to update an existing space or build a new one, this technology should be part of your plan.

Understanding the IoT

At its simplest level, the Internet of Things refers to devices that connect themselves to the Internet without a human being controlling that connection. Your Nest thermostat or your Smart TV are examples of connected devices that you may use in your personal life. Smart light switches, occupancy sensors, pressure sensors in parking lots, and the like are more examples of this technology. The real power in these connected devices comes when they get connected to powerful big data systems that can not only control them but also log the information that they deliver to give deeper insights.

Better Efficiency

One of the most popular applications of the IoT is to drive building efficiency. If your personal office knows that you've gotten in your car and driven away, for instance, it can turn off the lights and turn the thermostat down in winter or up in summer. Conversely, if it knows that you've run to the restroom (and it might now what you're doing in there -- and how long it takes!), it won't change anything. Since lighting and HVAC are major energy consumers, proactive management can save money -- and carbon.

Better Management

Imagine if you knew where your employees were at any time. Having them wear IoT security tags would make this possible. Sensors also let you know which areas of your office are bottlenecks, how fast your fleet vehicles are going, and when your people will arrive at the office. You can tell which conference rooms are busy when and which are underused and candidates for reconfiguration. Combining connected device data with artificial intelligence systems can give you insight into the relationship of your people and your space so that you can better deploy resources.

Better Work Experience

Connected devices are a powerful management tool and they make your office a more pleasant and productive space. Occupancy sensors and connected HVAC systems mean that crowded training rooms never have to get hot and stuffy. Parking lot sensors guide your employees to an open spot in the parking ramp or garage, saving them from driving in circles. IoT technology means that people can find their teammates and that no one ever has to walk in and find a dark office.

The IoT makes your office space smarter. This makes it an easier place to manage, but it also makes it a better workplace.
